Classical trigeminal neuralgia with concomitant continuous pain

Previously used terms:

Atypical trigeminal neuralgia; trigeminal neuralgia type 2.


Classical trigeminal neuralgia with persistent background facial pain.

Diagnostic criteria:
  1. Recurrent paroxysms of unilateral facial pain fulfilling criteria for Classical trigeminal neuralgia
  2. Concomitant continuous or near-continuous pain between attacks in the affected trigeminal distribution.

Peripheral or central sensitization may account for the continuous pain.
